Diet Overview

The Atkins Diet asks dieters to consume a lot of protein and few carbohydrates in order to lose weight. The first phase includes refraining from fruits, refined sugar, white bread and milk products. The carbohydrates are reduced to 12- 15 grams per day. The reason for restraining from carbohydrate is because excess carbohydrates are stored as fat.

Consumption of sugar also leads to fat buildup. Atkins says sugars should be avoided at all costs as it is especially bad for the body.

The second phase is where dieters are able to eat more carbohydrate, an extra 25 grams per day. The third phase allows additional carbohydrate intake by 10 grams a week. The last stage is maintaining the weight at this level by following the diet and a good exercise program.

After struggling with weight, Richard Atkins stumbled on the Journal of The American Medical Association published in 1958. The journal was an inspiration that helped Richard Atkins to come up with a low carbohydrate diet.
